New School Building Development

A proposal was submitted on 19th of December 2024 to redevelop the former St Mary’s School site on Town Range into a modern facility for Gibraltar’s Hebrew Primary School.
The project, in line with the Government of Gibraltar’s broader educational upgrade programme, aims to address long-standing issues with the existing school’s facilities on Bomb House Lane.
The plan involves re-purposing the historic 18th-century Town Range Barracks. Architects intend to retain key heritage features while integrating contemporary design elements, such as updated classrooms, improved IT infrastructure, and dedicated play areas. The site’s central location is expected to offer better access for pupils and their families.
The Development and Planning Commission on the 24th April 2025 approved - the conversion of the Old St Mary’s School in Town Range to the New Hebrew School.
Originally a barracks, dating back to the 1740s, the planned renovation is a sensitive one. It will keep the external façade and see the 1960’s extension replaced by a modern one.
Designs include a new raised playground and modern facilities, in line with the Government’s ongoing educational upgrade programme.
